Social media marketing is advancing in leaps and bounds, and with the likes of Twitter really coming into its own, nobody would ever have thought we would be basing some of our social media optimization techniques around social networking sites. Twitter is not the sole place you should concentrate on within your social media marketing, however nobody can deny its effectiveness in generating awareness and getting your topic talked about.
The thing about Twitter is that there is a lot more competition out there than you may initially think. With your only means of communication being through fairly short status updates, or tweets, surely there is not that much anybody can do to make themselves better than somebody else? The simple answer is, there are lots of things.
The interesting thing about Twitter is that it probably one of the most popular social networking sites for celebrities. What has this go to do with my company you may ask? Well celebrities are generally more interesting than a mere normal person, and finding out what Stephen Fry had for his lunch is bizarrely more fascinating than reading how you tripped over a paving stone in the morning.
If you really want to build a profile on Twitter and gain a good set of loyal followers for SEO benefit then you need to give them something to be interested in. There are a few simple things to consider when tweeting which will make more people tweet back and result in regular followers and increased new followers to your page.
Firstly, make your tweets interesting. Think about what you want to tell your target audience and then consider how they would like to hear it. If you are trying to establish yourself as an expert in a particular field or are working on behalf of a specific company or industry, then tailor the majority of your tweets around this subject so you create a pattern and a trend. However – don’t go overboard and only tweet when you have something worthwhile to say, as too many tweets can get annoying and will have a negative impact on your internet reputation management.
Try to describe things in your tweets as opposed to just state them. Consider what is more interesting for somebody to read rather than just what you want to say. For example, rather than telling someone you have just bought a new top, tweet a more descriptive post such as you are giving Kate Moss a run for her money in your new retro print tee from Topshop. This will be much more interesting and relevant to the majority of your audience.
A key tip in this type of social media is when responding to other people’s tweets or being involved in a conversation, try to reiterate the question at some points in your tweets. This makes it easier for new followers to join in as they can understand what the tweets are referring to even if they missed out on the initial one.
Remember it is not all about you. Unless you are in fact Stephen Fry, the chances are that people are not that interested in what you are getting up to. For this reason, try to inform people of things or invite people for discussion as opposed to just tell them what you ate last night.
