The net is in part responsible for recent globalising tendencies in the world economy, reducing the importance of distance by facilitating instant communication. It might therefore be thought that geography would be irrelevant to the acquisition of a search engine optimization company. However, it is not just the unevenness and the unpredictably of contemporary economic globalisation that means that geography still matters. Cultural issues mean that localities subject to globalising forces have not had their differences erased. Globalising trends often mix and blend cultures in a complex fashion, instead of imposing a homogeneous international culture.

The practical implication of this theoretical understanding is that barriers to global communication remain. These are not all as obvious as the obstacles formed by diverse languages. Knowledge about the local business environment can be problematic for people operating in different places to fully grasp. Sometimes there can be understandable confusion about quite basic activities which are performed in unfamiliar regions or nations.

It can therefore make sense to work with an SEO firm which has a deep appreciation of local circumstances. This kind of appreciation can lead to plans being based on realistic aspirations. It can also mean that useful local contacts and important local information is accessible to both parties. Depending on the nature of the search engine optimisation campaign concerned, it can be logical to employ local keywords, for example.  Knowing what the local target audience want is generally easier for individuals with some connection to the place.

There is also the vital issue of trust. It can be easier to develop a trusting relationship with someone who can be met in person on a fairly regular basis. Finding an SEO outfit via the internet could leave an online firm feeling a bit insecure, or frustrated if messages or calls are not responded to quickly. It is very important to recognise that selecting a local SEO firm is no ‘golden ticket’ to success. Distance is merely one factor to consider when choosing SEO services. Other criteria, such as cost, experience, size, track record and apparent expertise, will feature on the ‘wish lists’ of many clients. Some of these things will doubtless be considered to be of greater priority than geographical matters and that is exactly as it should be. However, it is important not to be misled by some types of globalisation discourse which suggest that technological evolution has made distance an obsolete consideration.
