“To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe.”
Anatole France (1844-1924).

Search engine optimization can sometimes seem like a technical subject. While formulaic approaches have foundered on the individuality of diverse sites, it has been possible to produce lists of SEO tips which are more or less effective in the various sets of circumstances out there. Although it is widely acknowledged to be necessary to crosscheck sources for accuracy, the concept that it is possible to gain a theoretical appreciation of the principles of SEO and apply them in concrete situations does not usually come with further qualifications. It is often remembered that there can be no guarantees in the fluid world of search, but the technocratic view that persistence usually pays is widely subscribed to.

The contention here is not that what is commonly written about SEO is in any way incorrect, but that more could be added to it. The need for creativity is often referred to, with regard to content production and in relation to other elements of continuous campaigns, but that is not controversial. What is not always stated is that for a campaign to achieve ‘take off’ with reference to a site’s rankings in the search engine results pages, a close partnership between the client and the SEO company is desirable. If superior rankings are to be translated into increased sales, this partnership has to be squarely based on trust and shared values.

A partnership between a client and an SEO outfit undoubtedly demands hard work from both parties. However, like any other relationship, it needs a positive outlook if it is going to lead to great outcomes. A positive perspective should not be based on mindless optimism. Instead it should be secured by a powerful vision of the future. Vision is an essential component of business success, but its abstract nature can make it hard to pin down. It is easy to discern when vision is absent, but considerably harder to generate it in the first place. In that respect it is related to inspiration.

Vision has to be brought down to earth and made into a realistic thing, capable of being easily communicated and capable of obtaining support. This SEO Strategy can be accomplished in various ways. The use of performance-related targets can be a way of outlining the direction a project is hoped to develop in. They can set out milestones which can be passed on the way to success. Failure to meet one target should not cause a partnership to break up. In SEO, a site is at the mercy of competing strategies being implemented on other sites. Thus it is misguided to pretend that everything is down to the efforts of the partners involved.

Vision, then, is an essential component of SEO strategy. Understandably, more articles are devoted to the intricacies of the technical aspects of SEO, because it is these tricky issues which the brightest individuals can struggle to grasp. However, whether a continuous campaign achieves consistent success is often related to the vision of the individuals who collectively drive it forward.
