Domain changes don’t have to completely kill off your rankings. Regardless of this, sites suffer every day from just that affliction. 1. Consider whether you really need to change. A domain change is a huge enterprise, and can put your site’s rankings on hold for months. If you do decide to move, read Google’s guidelines for domain changes before the fact, and read as much advice as you can.

2. Redirect pages to the new site. This is the first gentle move to make. Pages should be redirected gradually. Too many changes at once can make it difficult to handle problems when they occur.

3. Point your links. Begin by directing your internal links to the new domain, and try to lure your link profile across as well.

4. Hold on to the old domain. Google recommends that webmasters keep hold of the old domain for at least 180 days, to allow the rankings to transfer across.

5. Don’t rush. Most of the damage in site moves is caused by too much haste.
