Penalties have always been an issue for site owners in relation to website optimization. Whether you’ve been SEO link building, or simply tweaking the keyword density on your site, there’s always a danger that you’ve somehow crossed Google’s line. The frequency with which that line shifts doesn’t make it any easier.
Google’s pursuit of spam means that content is currently the most frequent source of penalization. That source results in two levels of penalties that all site owners should already be familiar with:
*Single spam incidents. Google has shown this year that spam content will no longer be tolerated. The good news is that having a couple of low-quality pieces isn’t going to get you de-indexed, but rather lose place in the rankings. Talk to us at SearchEngineOptimization.co.uk about what to do to regain rankings after such a penalty.
*’Egregious spam.’ Google’s Tiffany Oberoi recently stated that there is a significant difference in how Google will react to a site with a couple of spammy elements to a site that is obviously on the dark side. The latter will get you removed from the index. The bad news is, if you’ve been using black-hat techniques, you’ll have a lot of hard work ahead of you as well as the harsher penalty.
What else can get you into trouble? The old penalties for hidden code and infractions of the user agreement, such as selling links, still apply. Without deliberate attempts to deceive Google, though, content is now the most dangerous area.
