With the recent addition of a speed tracking feature for webmasters, Google does seem to be indicating that speed is important for rankings. Site speed has been a factor included in most search engine optimisation services for a long time now, so this move has come as no surprise to the average SEO company. It does seem to have set a few site owners into a panic, however.

Should you panic? Only if your search engine optimization company hasn’t looked at your site’s speed. It is something you need to check in on from time to time, and Google’s move indicates that tightening your download times is more important than ever.

The old established factors for SEO, used for a number of years now, are:

  • reputation (or authority), in which links are a major factor
  • relevance
  • quality of site, to which content contributes
  • site speed

And a more recent factor, ‘timeliness,’ was added on when the search engines began to take notice of the trend toward real-time results.

In short, your site’s rankings rely on the same things they did before. What is now clear is that slow sites are going to have a tougher time than before, and that break-downs in your hardware are going to be more costly to your internet presence. Site speed is not a new concern, but it’s certainly something to think about.
