When it comes to following market trends or industry trends it can be difficult to decide as an individual or company, whether or not to react to these trends and adapt your SEO strategies accordingly. In some instances, it is crucial that you do, but in others it is worth taking a bit of a step back and just considering whether this is a long term change or just a fleeting fashion.

The word ‘trends’ is defined as ‘a general direction in which something is developing or changing’ – the operative word here being ‘changing’. If something can change and develop itself into something new, then it can also change time and time again. A trend is rarely a long term thing and we all know trends can come and go, so do not be too hasty in terms of changing your entire web content to gear towards a new trend.

One area where people do tend to react to change is when they notice something different on their competitor’s web pages. The theory that everybody else is doing it, so I should too, is not always relevant in search engine optimisation. Obviously this area needs to be monitored and if you are literally being left behind, you do need to take action. However, many companies decide to add or change keywords which are currently in vogue, or refer to common slang words of that day. Sometimes following these trends too closely can make you forget what your company actually stands for. Never lose sight of what you are all about.

Forums and social networking sites are also areas where people focus a lot of their attention. There is no mistaking that all of these areas are crucial in terms of your social media optimization, however do not cut off all resources on your web page and replace them with Tweets or opinions. Social networking is immense and is more than likely here for the duration, but ultimately, it is nothing more than a trend so always keep a solid base.

One area of trend which does appear to be evolving in a positive way is the use of mobile internet. As a nation, people are travelling more and more and technology is advancing at such a rate that we no longer need to be sat at a desk, in a building, or even near an actual computer to conduct the majority of our internet activity. The trend of accessing the internet through mobile phones is one which is likely to be around for a while, so it is worth assessing how effective your web page runs on devices such as mobiles and Blackberry phones to keep updated with your site’s SEO potential.

With people always being in a rush nowadays too, it is a good idea to have a website clear up now and again. This will just ensure there are no outdated links or files that are dormant, which could potentially result in your site speed being a little slow. Speed and convenience is a trend unlikely to fade, so ensuring your site runs efficiently is a top priority.

Keeping on top of the latest trends and innovative techniques is undoubtedly a task in itself. A search engine optimization company makes it their priority to be as informed as possible, thus maximising SEO potential for clients’ websites.
