If you use Twitter for your business and to promote your website, there could be some areas that you can improve on to help your overall SEO efforts.  The popularity of social media and networking sites have provided new means for business owners and website owners to promote and market their products and services online. It is also a great way to market and connect with others all through an account that you have with Twitter. While there are a variety of ways that you can use search engine optimization techniqies to increase your search engine rankings and get more traffic to your website, these ten tips will help you make the most of your Twitter account.

1.    Choose a Good Handle - this is a good way to help you boost your SEO efforts by using your Twitter account. You should try to pick a username that is related to your business or the products and brands that you are selling. Your handle should be something that personalizes your account and makes it easy to recognize what you are promoting and the nature of your campaign. It also creates a static address that could be helpful for indexing. The more distinctive your handle is, the more successful your online promotions can be and the more users that you can attract.

2.    Select your account name – you should try to get the most benefit out of your Twitter account by choosing an account name that reflects what you do and what you want other people to see.  This could involve choosing an account name which includes some frequently searched words in your chosen industry.  Use only the words that are really related to what you are promoting.

3.    Make the Biography page work – you can use the Bio line feature on Twitter to help create a professional and effective description about your products and business. You will have 160 characters in your Bio to describe what you want others to view about you and make them want to join and follow you on Twitter. The words that you choose for your bio tell other users what it is that you are selling and the nature of what you are doing. Be specific and try to enhance the points that you want others to see to get the most out of this social media tool.

4.    Spread the Number of Contacts - you should focus on ways that you can build links to your Twitter account and how you can best use the social networking tools to enhance the products that you are marketing. You can use your Twitter account to your advantage by placing a call to action for it on your website. This allows customers to follow the link and connect with you on Twitter. It is easy to set up, and can broaden the number of people that you are able to reach. It also helps to increase the usability of your website and networks all of the contacts that you have on your website to your twitter account.

5.    Use the URL  - when you are setting your Twitter account, be sure to add in the URL of your web site to help promote your presence on other social networking places. This can help draw contacts and new customers from all of the other online media sources that you may be using. Linking all of your accounts together and on the other websites is a great way to stay connected to people and to create an online presence that is universal. Twitter can be a big part of your overall internet reputation management along with other sites and networking aids.

6.    Choose the characters of your tweet correctly
- each tweet that you make on Twitter can be important as it is related to SEO. It can determine what is going to appear in the tweet tag that shows up on search result pages from Google. There are about 42 characters that are used to factor in on each tweet tag and this includes the account name. You should choose the characters that you are using to best describe not only your business but also what is likely to get you the best rankings from search engines.  Only tweet something worthwhile though!

7.    Use keywords in your tweets - when you are able, you should start out each tweet with a keyword phrase or theme to start the message. You can use any keywords that are going to help you strengthen your overall SEO efforts and to get the best searches from those terms. Remember that you do not want to fill your tweet with empty phrases, but rather use creative keywords along with your interesting message to enhance it and improve your visibility with search engines.

8.    Retweetability  - this refers to the character limitations that Twitter has for each account. You need to optimize these characters to obtain retweetability. If you want your message to be a hit on Twitter, you should try to keep  it well under the character limit so that anyone who is following you and wants to retweet can easily add it to your handle and place it in front of the tweet. Keeping the number of characters that you use lower than what is allowed creates enough space for someone to retweet you quickly and easily.

9.    Use links - you can insert links into your tweets that are designed to take users to the content that you have. Twitter has been shown to improve the traffic that you can get to your website so you will want to use it in this way, but people are wary of clicking on links so ensure you explain what the link is to. If you want to share links, you can also create links to your other social networking sites along with your web site. If you use a blog to connect with other professionals and with customers, you can create a link to your blog on Twitter that makes it easy for users to get to your blog and read the content. This is just one way of building links to your website and helping to drive the right kind of traffic.

10.    Direct users to good content - this is an important step in using Twitter. If you are going to have links that go to other content websites or to your own, make sure that you are directing your users to go directly to the pages that have the content.  You do not want to make your users look around for it and try to figure out what it is. If you are talking about a topic and provide a link to go to content on your website, be specific and only direct users to that page of content.

Don’t overcook Twitter or you will drive users away rather than to your website. It should be a way to enhance your customers’ experience and help you to connect with your clients rather than merely a place to spam everyone who follows you with constant sales tweets. Keep it regular but not repetitive, interesting but not irrelevant, and enjoy it! Twitter is a great tool to add another aspect to your website’s search engine optimisation campaign.
