The Benefits of Using Long Tail Keywords

June 6th, 2010 by Dan

The Benefits of Using Long Tail Keywords

Web professionals offering search engine optimization services know there is more to keyword research than just looking at the queries most people type into search engines. Understanding the significance of different types of keywords can dramatically improve the effectiveness of an SEO campaign.

Although a lot of attention is paid to those popular keywords which come up time after time in searches, with businesses competing with one another to rank highest in search results, these well-used words and phrases only make up a small percentage of the total searches made each day. What are called long tail keywords, which may only be used once or at most a few times a day, make up a larger proportion of all search queries, perhaps amounting to around seventy percent in all. Popular keywords, which are described as being at the head of the search curve, and which might be used in hundreds or thousands of searches each day, actually constitute only around thirty percent of the total queries made.

Obviously, managing to incorporate long tail keywords into web pages is an excellent strategy for capturing a larger proportion of search queries, but it can be hard to imagine exactly how this is done. Companies offering SEO services have methods which enable long tail keywords first to be recognised, and secondly to be inserted into page content, and although these techniques are often time-consuming they are well worth the hours invested.

If searches are conducted initially using those keywords which are popular and relevant to one’s own business, this will naturally bring up the top ranking pages for those particular words. Useful research can then be carried out by analysing the text from the first couple of dozen pages returned, in order to spot those useful and relevant words which are not already included in the list of the most popular keywords.

Another way of researching long tail keywords is to use one of the online tools provided by companies such as Google, which display data relating to various search terms. A list of less commonly used alternatives to a popular search query is usually viewable, and all the possible search variations can be noted down and analysed.

Although many of the phrases probably will not make grammatical sense and would be impossible to weave into page text as they stand, similar patterns of word usage generally show up throughout the list. Some words will often tend to appear at the beginning of a search query, while others will crop up repeatedly at the end, and useful key phrases can be constructed by distilling the essence of the list of phrases. This can be a complex task, and it makes sense to employ professionals specialising in SEO services to do the work as they will have the skills and experience needed to execute it well.

At SearchEngineOptimization.co.uk we are experts in keyword research and we can choose and utilise suitable long tail keywords as part of your website’s SEO strategy.

The Rights And Wrongs Of Business Blogs

June 4th, 2010 by Susie

The Rights And Wrongs Of Business Blogs

Many search engine optimisation experts are now recommending that a business blog be included as part of a site’s SEO plan. Although blogs aren’t suitable for absolutely every site, they often add to a site’s appeal to both internet users and the search engines. The regular supply of content to the site’s pages gives the SEO plan a real boost, and the extra information that blogs allow you to display can be a real attractor for your target user group.

It should go without saying that a business blog only works if written well. Many companies opt to have a professional writer form their actual content, and you can discuss this with us at SearchEngineOptimization.co.uk. Getting a professional on board can ensure your blog content fits in seamlessly with the rest of your search engine optimization. Whether you engage a professional, or whether you decide to go it on your own, there are some areas of a business blog that are important to do the right way.

1. Basic writing skills. The basic quality of the writing on your blog will define whether people read it, or click back to the search engines.

The wrong way: Posts full of grammatical and spelling errors, stuffed with keywords and written in a style that clashes with the rest of the site. Even one of these things can bring your blog down. It’s important not only to proof-read posts thoroughly, but to make sure that the style that is written blends in with the personality of your business.

The right way: A thoroughly proofread, well-written piece of content every time. Sourcing from a professional should cover this.

2. Content ideas. One of the harder parts of a blog is the need for fresh content every day. Many site owners find they run out of ideas very swiftly.

The wrong way: Content that does not relate to the purpose of the site, or short updates that make little sense. Posting this kind of content may provide new material for the search engines to go through, but it won’t please your site’s human users. Brief posts are permissible every once in a while, as long as they stay on topic.

The right way: Content that is always thoughtful, insightful or instructional. It helps to plan out your content for months in advance, plotting out post ideas and drafting a rough structure for each post. As stated above, occasional brief posts are acceptable, as long as the reader is tempted to come back for more later.

3. Blog integrity. Many businesses treat their blog as another platform for advertising. This ignores the general style of blogging. Internet users expect certain things from blogs, and if a blog doesn’t conform, it won’t get readers.

The wrong way: A blog full of marketing material, or one which aims to manipulate the reader or search engines – or one which is all about the business.

The right way: A blog that respects the time users take to read it, and provides a valuable experience.

Links and Building Links

May 25th, 2010 by Mike

Links are certainly one of the best ways that you are going to get people to see your website, but you need to know how to use them correctly and where you can post them if you really want to see success online. There are networks and forums that you can use to post links to your website and that will allow you to use content, articles and other items from the website (including graphics) when you are creating the links that you are using in ads. Building links is one of the best ways that you can use search engine optimization when you are trying to create a better website.

Learning where to look for places to post links is part of the process. You need to find websites that are going to allow you to post links.  These may include forums and blogs. If you have never created a blog or posted to a forum, you may want to think about starting to see what works the best for you. If you need ideas to get started, there are a lot of easy-to-use resources available to help use SEO in the links that you post.

You have probably often heard that the more links you have out on the web, the better. There is some truth to that, but there are also some links that you should be careful of using and posting. If a website that you are posting a link on is banned from one of the search engines, your website itself can be banned for having a link to it. Before you place links on any other website, check out the website and make sure that it looks like a good place to put your link.

Create Backlinks

Backlinks are great to use and can really help you get more traffic to your website. If you are not sure how to use and create backlinks, there are a lot of resources available online that can help you get started. Links are a great way to get more traffic to your website if you choose the right ones. You can also place links to certain products through keywords that you are using to help market your website.

You can place links to your website on a number of online communities and networks.  You can also upload content and articles from the pages of your website to create links and use the SEO in your website. Once you have created links and have placed them on various websites online, it is a good idea to make sure that you track them and manage all of the links that you have, so that you know which ones are getting traffic to your website. This is especially important if you have to pay to have your links on websites or networks online, and need to know if they are working for you and getting you the traffic that is worth the cost that you are paying to advertise.

If you need to learn more about managing links and ads that you have placed on a variety of networks or other websites, there are some tools and programs that you can download and use that will not only help you keep track of the links and ads that you are currently advertising, but also to remind you to update the links and manage the updates that you make. Don’t neglect your links and ads that you have placed online.  Keep checking them to make sure they are still being seen. If you are not seeing them, then you should start to create a new campaign.  Use new keywords to create the ads and to create new links on the websites that you have been using to post for the products.

If you do need to make changes to any of the ads or links that you have placed online, having a program that helps you manage all of your ads and links can be very useful, and you can often benefit from being able to make one change and have it updated to all of your links, instead of having to update each one of them individually. Make sure that, if you do make changes, you get them approved, if needed, on the websites and networks that you are using.

How To Speed Up Your SEO Results

March 29th, 2010 by Dan

These days, people are impatient. They want results and they want them now; there’s no time for hanging around in the modern world of business. The same applies to search engine optimization. People are expecting results quicker than ever before, and while the whole process of search engine optimisation takes time to show results, there are ways you can speed it up a bit. Here are just a few of them.

1.    Update your website regularly. Search engines like information and the more you update your site the more often web crawlers will visit, and if you update it with relevant, keyword-targeted and search-specific information you’ll have even more success. Blogging is a great way to do this.

2.    Keep your content unique. Never duplicate your content and certainly never indulge in plagiarism, as this will have the opposite effect entirely. Make sure to keep your SEO content fresh, and at the same time make sure that it’s usable and useful information to hook readers and keep them coming back for more.

3.    Add a link to your website on forums. Forums get crawled more often than regular sites because of how often they’re updated, and if your link is on there (preferably in a signature – don’t engage in spamming or other underhanded tactics as it won’t pay off) you’re more likely to get visited by crawlers as well as other web users.

4.    Hit SEO from all angles rather than just one. You can never expect quick results if you only use one technique, so make sure to employ every tactic that you possibly can. That means that you need to remember the importance of link building, keyword density, META tags and even practices such as social media optimisation, because it’s only by a combination of several methods that you can expect results.

5.    Use every SEO tool at your disposal. SEO tools are there for a reason, and using them wisely will be one of the biggest ways to enhance your success and to get quicker results. They’ll be able to analyse your traffic and can even point out areas where you’re going wrong, and that can be invaluable in helping you to improve your techniques.

6.    Consider investing in the services of a search engine optimisation company. A good SEO Company will have all the time and expertise necessary to make your strategy a success, and because they only work in this field you’ll often get much quicker results than if you attempted it on your own.

7.    As much as you may be tempted to, NEVER go for black hat techniques. While they may pay off in the short-term they’re sure to backfire, and your quick results will soon start to flounder. Always go for ethical SEO practices and you can enjoy lasting success.

These are just a few ways that you can speed up your SEO results, and if you try them out I’m sure you’ll be incredibly successful in your endeavours. Remember to combine several of these tips if you want to see the most effect, and if you need a bit of help take on board tip number 6 and come to us here at SearchEngineOptimization to see what we can do for you.

Unusual Tips To Help Your SEO Campaign

March 28th, 2010 by Dan

Everyone has ideas on the best ways to improve search rankings, and often these tried and tested SEO strategies can indeed do the job. However, there are always new ideas to try out, and a lot of the more unusual ones can have just as much of an effect as traditional ideas. So, here are a few unusual strategies to help you succeed in your SEO campaign, and all of them would be well worth considering.

Consider adding misspelt keywords to your itinerary. The whole point of search engine optimization is to optimise your content for what people are actually searching for (as long as that is what you provide), and a lot of the time they search for misspelt terms. Targeting this area can be a great way to outdo your competitors, but just remember to be selective. Don’t put misspellings throughout your main content as this can jeopardise the credibility of your site, so instead leave a few carefully-targeted yet misspelt comments on your blog posts to hit this area with flying colours.

Use Google Images to your advantage. Images can be used to target keywords through their title attribute, filename, directory name and any other related keywords surrounding the image itself, so never underestimate how important images can be in your quest for improved search rankings.

Search engines like information, and you can use your blog to comment about the most recent news to appear higher in search results. For example, if a competitor is releasing a new product and you write a targeted and valuable blog post about it, when people search for that product your website will come close to the top of the list. It may sound detrimental to write about a competitor, but you’re effectively stealing visitors from them because they’ll come to you instead. So, always do your research and try to be one of the first people to release a valuable niche article to poach a few visitors.

These are just a few unusual tips that you should try in your SEO campaign, and if you try a few of them out I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results. By employing more unusual techniques you’ll also have the advantage over your competitors and could quickly scale up that search page, so don’t always go for tried and tested measures and give a few of these search engine optimisation tips a go instead. You’re bound to be glad that you did.

Top Tips For Effective SEO

March 19th, 2010 by Mike

When it comes to search engine optimization, there are so many routes you can do down that it often seems difficult to know where to start. And, when you consider that a lot of advice is just plain wrong, you don’t want to be heading in the wrong direction. So, to help you succeed in your SEO campaign to reach the dizzy heights of the top spot, here are a few tips that should always be remembered.

- When choosing your domain, remember to use the most common top level domains (TLDs) which are .com, .net and .org. The only caveat to this is if your business is country-specific, but it still makes sense to purchase the other domains as well. This way you can prevent anyone else from using the same one in a different country, and a great idea is to get the .com domain but then, when people type it in, redirect it to .co.uk (or equivalent) instead.

- Measure your performance. This is the only way to ensure that your SEO campaign is working, as how else can you be sure that your efforts are paying off? Use tools such as Google Analytics to your advantage, as having a thorough picture of how your website is working and where your visitors come from will tell you what, if anything, needs to be tweaked.

- Use keywords and link building strategies to your advantage. Research the most popular keywords in relation to your business and build your site around them. A few unusual keywords would be a good choice as well – this means that you’ll have less competition so will be more likely to appear at the top of search results. Be careful not to stuff your content though – keyword stuffing in SEO link building can result in severe penalties and can even get your site banned from search engines, so make sure to do everything in moderation.

- Create a blog. This is one of the easiest ways to improve your search rankings, as you’ll be able to use numerous tricks to your advantage. Blog posts can be used for targeted keywords and optimised META tags, and the comments section can be a great way to add mis-spelt keywords if they’re part of your search engine optimisation campaign. There’s also the option to post your articles on other sites, creating link banks and increasing traffic.

- Try to focus on text rather than images across your site. Images don’t get picked up by search engines but text does, so make sure to have plenty of content and keep it regularly updated.

- Don’t use too much complex javascript in your pages, as too much of it is likely to confuse search engines so won’t be picked up as easily. The same applies to flash – try using other languages to base your content around and you’ll have much more success with search engines.

These are just a few tips that you should always remember if you want your SEO campaign to succeed, and if you bear them in mind you can look forward to improved traffic and a much higher ranking through effective search engine optimization services.

This could mean asking around for recommendations from friends or colleagues, or head online to find companies with great reviews and testimonials from past clients.

25 Tips to Improve Your Ecommerce SEO

March 7th, 2010 by Mike

A lot of Ecommerce sites have been way off in search engines listings for a variety of reasons. Some of them are because a lot of online stores have less informative and useful data in their sites and also, most of them have little or no product description of what they have to offer at all. Aside from these, they also have no exclusive user generated content and have unsatisfactory internal linking around their sites. When it comes to Search Engine Optimization, these Ecommerce sites experience a lot of difficulties and challenges. Read below and learn 25 tips to successfully optimize Ecommerce sites.

1.    Follow the site’s Page Yield. Page yields are one of the best determinations in measuring the length of SEO’s so called “long tail”. You can do this by putting your page yield to the Google test. Every website has keywords for optimization – that includes your site. So what you have to do is take those keywords that are linked to your site and divide it by the number of pages that Google indexes. This will be equal to your page yield, which is also one of the factors in determining the effectiveness of a website in general.

2.    Use Title Attributes when making links. Even if title attributes are not that important as the anchor text, they are one of the factors used in the ranking algorithm. In order to give search engines with more information about what your website contains, you should be able to use the appropriate title attributes for all anchor texts in your site.

3.    Make Brand Landing Pages. You should set up optimized landing pages for every brand you sell so that customers could easily find what they are looking for.

4.    Internal Site Search Optimization. A lot of online visitors, especially the new ones make use of search engines to look for products or websites they want to visit. In this line, they would also expect full workability of the internal site search of your page. Make sure you make it fully functional and optimized.

5.    Image Optimization. A large increase in traffic from an image search is the result of populating alt text attributes with the product and brand name of a certain site. Make sure you do the same to all your product images to optimize them.

6.    Avoid using “view” or “more” on your product category pages. Using “view” or “more” with you product landing pages makes the spiders ignore your product because it tells them nothing. Make sure you put a little effort in your product landing pages.

7.    Avoid stuffing keywords in your navigation. A lot of keywords that are stuffed in the navigation area are useless nowadays because of the improvement of search engines. Make sure you only use important keywords that will point to your site’s important pages.

8.    Create a navigation that allows spiders. JavaScript and CSS based navigation structures prevent spider from crawling in your site, so you should avoid these structures. If unfortunately you have one of these, try and duplicate the navigation with normal hyperlinks in the footer of each page.

9.    Product description links. Come up with keyword links that would link one product to another. This is very effective when targeting vey long keywords. Of course, link building is a mainstay of effective SEO.

10.    For duplicate contents, make use of iFrames.
Having a duplicate content will get search engines to penalize you. If you have duplicate contents that are going to appear on every page, make sure putting them inside an iframe.

11.    Use keyword rich file names for your pages. Definitely, a keyword filled page file name is more useful to a searchbot rather than a simple one.

12.    Tagging your products. Give your customers the freedom to tag your products with their own keywords. This way, your product will be more searchable than making a tag of your own.

13.    Make a Product Feed. Product RSS Feeds are a great way to getting backlinks that go directly to a site’s landing page. Make sure you create one of your own and have it submitted to your product aggregators.

14.    Do not use Session IDs in your URLs. This cookie-less session IDs creates a lot of duplicate contents which confuses the spiders. You can prevent this from happening by using the right type of cloaking.

15.    Internal contextual links. In order for a search engine to get all the information it needs about your page, use keyword filled anchor texts within a paragraph to link to a pertinent page.

16.    Make sure your main pages get the most PR flow. You can do this by restricting your PR flow on less important pages with the use of JavaScript links, no-follow tags, robots.txt files, and form submit links. This will make sure the flow of traffic will be huge on you category and product pages.

17.    Allow customers to review your products. Make your customers rate your products and leave a comment for every transaction they make with you. This will ensure that you guarantee other people that the content in your website is unique.

18.    Exclusive Meta Description Tags. Put the same product description that is on your product page to the description meta tags to make sure that you have distinct contents on every product page.

19.    Exceptional Meta Keyword Tags. Even if meta content does not have any effect on your ranking, this prevents duplicate contents which also saves you from penalty. Make sure your keywords and description are unique on each product pages.

20.    Use unique tag titles. You should avoid extra content that are repeated in each tags to prevent value dilution in the rest of the title tag.

21.    Make sure all your products are 2 to 3 click away from your homepage. This will make sure that your product pages will be closer to your PageRank source.

22.    Create simple category and product URLs. Avoid using useless IDs and other parameters passing you URL to ensure optimization.

23.    Use singular keywords in your Product Pages. Plural keywords are effective in home pages and other landing pages with SEO.

24.    In your product database, make an SEO keyword field. Not all people search by brand names. When you product is new, this works best. Create a keyword field in your product database and fill them with commonly searched keywords related to your product.

25.    Do not include product descriptions by manufacturers. Make sure what you put in the website is unique. Do not copy and paste the descriptions from the manufacturer’s pages. Your own copy is far more effective for search engine optimisation.

10 Strategies To Get Your New Site Indexed Fast

March 5th, 2010 by Dan

If you have built your website and are now ready to get indexed, there are some tips that you can use to get indexed faster. It can take a while for your new website to get indexed, but if you follow some easy steps you may be able to get indexed without having to wait as long.

1.    Get Links - search engines follow links that are online to see where they go and what they can find. One of the easiest and most effective methods to get your website indexed is to get links from other websites.  The more links that you can submit online, the easier it is for search engines to find your website. There are a lot of places that you can submit your links to.  When you use social web sites, like Twitter or Facebook or any other social media site, you can create links to your website. If you have a blog that you use on your website, find websites to get and place links for the blog also.

2.    Site structure – having a good structure to your website is important if you want to get indexed quickly with Google and other search engines. You need to have a clear path of how your website works and make sure that it is easy to get to. If your website is well organized it makes it much easier for search engines to find what they are looking for and get it indexed.  If you are not sure that your website is structured well, you may want to get it analyzed or use SEO tools that can tell you what areas you need to improve on.

3.    Navigate to Google Browsers - you should be able to create links on your website that will direct users to use a browser from a search engine. This can be in the form of a text link or search box that you can place on any page of your website that will allow users to search from the links that you place.

4.    Mention URL on Message boards – if you use message boards you can post messages about your new website and be sure to include the URL. The more that your URL is listed on different websites and message boards, the more it will be seen by search engines and you can get indexed more quickly. If you do not currently belong to any message boards, you may want to consider signing up and seeing what they can do for you. It can be a great way to get your website out there for search engines to find.

5.    Perform link requests on search engines - you can submit website and link requests to search engines to help you get links to your website and find ways to use other links on your website. There are a lot of websites and blogs that you can use online to submit link requests to. When you are going to send requests to websites for links, you want to make sure that you are choosing websites that have information related to your business and website and you want to verify that the other websites are going to be a good idea to post on your own website.  Link building is a vital part of SEO.

6.    Create a Wikipedia entry - this is a great and easy way to help get your website links online and get noticed by search engines. Wikipedia is a great resource for you to use and if you place an entry on the website, you can attract more attention to your links and be able to have search engines find and follow your links. Because search engines display results from Wikipedia for a lot of searches, having your website listed in Wikipedia can help your website get better rankings.  However they won’t allow business profiles, so you need to have done something newsworthy in order to be accepted.

7.    Do a site profile search – when you are going to start promoting and marketing your website, you want to make sure that you are able to find it. If you are not able to find it, no one else will be either. An easy way to test this is to do a site profile search of your website and see if it returns any results in the search engines. This is also a great way to see what other marketing you need to do and what areas you need to improve on that can help you get indexed faster. Looking after your brand perception online is known as internet reputation management.

8.    Submit links to top directories - you can submit links to your websites on all of the major search engines. Each of the search engines has a different URL that you can use to submit your links to and you can easily find them online. When you are submitting your links, make sure that they are going to the information and pages on your website that you have the related content on. Only submit links that are going to be easy for the search engines to get to and that lead them directly to the pages that you want.
