In the competitive world of online marketing and online reputation management, it all comes down to SEO. Effective SEO can lead to increased traffic, more visitors and increased profits, and that’s what everyone in this business wants to achieve. Using blogs as an addition to other online link building strategies and tactics can be a great way to improve the site’s ranking in search engines, but how can they make so much of a difference?

Well, blogs give businesses the chance to constantly update their site, and fresh content can be a great way to increase visibility. Sites that remain stagnant are never going to hit the top spots in search engines, or at least they’ll never stay there, because sites that do update their search engine optimization content on a regular basis will quickly overtake those that don’t.

It also offers businesses the chance to target several keywords at once, and if it’s done right this can lead to even higher rankings. Blog posts can be specifically written around a few select keywords, and they can be used in the body of the post itself or by using tags. As long as the keywords aren’t overused (keyword stuffing can lead to penalties from search engines, giving the opposite effect entirely), the post will easily be picked up by search engines to give the desired outcome.

Then there’s the impact that the user-generated portion of the blog can have, or in other words the comments section. Encouraging reader participation can lead to increased popularity and more back links, particularly if the post is especially interesting or informative, offering another great way to improve SEO. Then, the recent rise in SMM allows the blog post to be “shared” and seen in sites and social media marketing networks across the globe, leading to higher visibility and even more traffic than there would be otherwise.

Getting people to comment on posts isn’t just a great way to increase the popularity of the blog, but it can also be used to easily and strategically incorporate even more keywords. The business could post a few comments of its own including their specific keywords, and this can be particularly effective if mis-spellings are part of the SEO link building strategy – it gives the business the chance to put mis-spelt keywords in the comments section without jeopardising the credibility of the rest of the site.

Starting a blog doesn’t have to be that difficult either, as no matter what industry the business is in there’s bound to be something exciting surrounding it. News items can be posted or discussions can be started, and showing people that there’s more to the site than boring content gives them even more reason to visit.

So, blogs really can be a great way to boost a site’s rankings. They allow the site to be constantly updated with fresh content, and with keyword targeting and audience participation there’s even more scope for improved search rankings. This is an SEO technique that should never be overlooked, and all businesses with an online presence should consider adding a blog to their website as part of their search engine optimization campaign.
