Performing SEO By The Book?

October 2nd, 2010 by Phil

Any UK SEO service has to grapple with a broad range of issues when devising or implementing a campaign on behalf of a site owner. This is in part because of the complexities of the topic, but it is also because there are areas where there is little consensus. Two areas in which there may be a little uncertainty relate to the ‘bread and butter’ work done by a SEO service. Firstly, there is the question of whether or not Google’s ethical guidelines should be adhered to. Secondly, there is the question of whether or not a SEO plan should be devised in an ‘off the peg’ fashion. While some SEO services consider that these questions are easily answered, there are actually some areas of uncertainty which may be useful to highlight.

At Searchengineoptimization.co.uk we think deeply about the flexible SEO strategies we devise and implement during the course of our tailored campaigns. While we have clear positions with regard to our methods, we never become dogmatic in our thinking. This openness is of use for research and monitoring purposes. Furthermore, it means that the fresh information that is discovered can be digested and put to work smoothly.

It might seem to some SEO experts that the rejection of black hat methods is utterly straightforward. After all, these unethical techniques breach Google’s guidelines and can incur search engine penalties. Furthermore, users are rarely impressed by those sites which have been forced up the rankings using the black hat arsenal. It is the case that it is prudent to avoid keyword stuffing, mass link purchasing and cloaking. Nor is duplicate content the best way to go. Users do not want to find the same information spread around the net; they want to be engaged by fresh and unique content.

However, Google is not always very specific about the degree to which a technique can be utilised. Its idea that any technique should only benefit the user and not the major search engines is not precise and it is arguably utopian. For example, its own workings do not seem to live up to the noble aspiration. Video is appreciated by many users, but the search engines do not give that type of content much value. Moreover, Google’s position on keyword density is quite vague. If they have not specified the practical implications of a rule, it is hard to say that adhering to it is simple. Fortunately, experience is a useful guide to using an appropriate number of long tail keywords.

When it comes to ‘off the peg’ SEO, a similar pattern can be observed. At first sight, it is pretty obvious that deploying standardised techniques to diverse sites is a poor notion. Each site has its unique features and precise needs which have to be worked with. This means that only tailored campaigns will succeed.

However, some SEO tips are applicable in a diversity of contexts. For example, the employment of an informative blog is typically a very shrewd way of proceeding. Thus while the individuality of a site must always be acknowledged, it is acceptable to consider commonly used techniques.

SEO And Creating Good Blogs

May 26th, 2010 by Susie

You probably see a lot of blogs on the Internet and you may have tried creating a blog on your own for the website that you have, but if you are not using them correctly you probably are not going to see that they can really work. If you do want to create a successful blog that can help your website improve, the key is to learn how to start using SEO tools to make it better. Here are a few ideas that you can try out when you are going to be creating a good blog.

One tip that every website owner should consider is blogging only on what they know. Don’t blog on a subject you aren’t experienced with. Many novice bloggers think that “showing people ways to earn money fast” is the way to earn. That is a big misconception because there are a lot of websites that blog about that topic so, unless you’re an expert on it, there’s no need to pretend to be. In fact, 1 out of 10 blogs are written about this topic, which is a lot.  Even if you did want to still write it, you would probably find yourself at the bottom of the search results on every major search engine. You need to think outside the box.  Don’t write about what everyone else is. Rather, write your blog on a subject you consider yourself somewhat of an authority on so readers will see your blog as legitimate and worthwhile.

Finding Your Niche

Keep your readers reading until the end. This tip is somewhat related to the first tip because, if you are not writing about the specialty that you know, it will be reflected in your blogs. Keep it to the point but, at the same time, still be descriptive. Your goal is to have a reader start at the beginning and go all the way to the end. You don’t want the reader to get bored or lose interest after a few sentences.

Be aware of the titles. Your title says a lot about your site and it will most likely be your reader’s first impression of your blog. Don’t choose a title that is too wordy or long-winded but, at the same time, make sure your title says enough about your blog to give the readers a good idea about what your page contains.

Have about 5 articles or posts for your readers. If all you have is one or two, then most likely your visitors will never come back because it will appear as if you aren’t putting much effort or interest into your blog. Also, if you notice your traffic picking up, don’t become lazy and think your hard work is done. You should still keep updating your blog on a regular basis, preferably once a week or on the average of once a month.

Errors with Graphics

Don’t overdo graphics or animation on your blog. If you already have articles that are useful then there’s really not the need to have to animate the blog. Ask yourself, “Are the graphics really helpful to my visitor?” If the answer is, “yes,” then go ahead and continue using the graphics.  But if the answer is, “no,” then get rid of them. Sometimes graphics and animations make a blog more lively and entertaining, but too many could make the reader annoyed and your page looking cluttered.

Your homepage is the most vital part of your site. You need to make it as user friendly and easy to use as possible. You should link the majority of your posts to your homepage and your pages should be using a link back to the home page. If you have some blogs that were more widely read and acclaimed than others, then you could consider making a “Top 5 blogs” link and place that on your homepage as well.

Don’t confuse the blog by using different topics or subjects. If you do have other articles, create other blogs. Do not mix your blog with different topics.  For example, what would you think about a blog that gave software advice along with cooking tips? You would probably think it’s rather odd and not very professional. There are numerous people who want to write on two different topics so they choose their blog that receives more traffic to talk to write about the other topic.  This will give a bad impression, so avoid doing it. If you want to blog about various unrelated subjects then, by all means do so, just keep them completely separate from each other and don’t overlap.

Optimising A Blog For SEO

May 7th, 2010 by Susie

Blogs are a superb way of placing content before new audiences. There is also the benefit, for search engine optimisation purposes, that blogging is such a sociable medium. It is natural for bloggers to link to one another and comment on each other’s posts, which means that an online reputation can be established, and numerous links might be acquired. All of this is extremely positive from an SEO viewpoint.

Blogging platforms are generally easy to use and provide a quick and simple way to publish content. The most popular choice for bloggers, WordPress, is frequently used to create an entire site. Once the platform is in place, expert knowledge of HTML is not required in order to publish posts, which makes it a perfect solution for those who are mainly interested in creating a constant stream of articles.

The sociable, community-oriented nature of blogs is a major part of their contribution to SEO. However, the way an individual blog is set up and the manner in which its content is organised have a great effect on search engine optimisation, both in general and for vertical search results, where visitors are searching blogs in particular.

It probably goes without saying that a blog should have an RSS feed, and this should be as simple to use as possible, preferably requiring a single click on an appropriate button in order to subscribe. If posts are short, readers might like to view the whole of the text via the feed to save them having to visit the website. That might seem counter-intuitive, but the emphasis is on pleasing readers, and no-one likes to be forced into visiting a site.

As blogging platforms are not always as well optimised for search engines as they might be, it is well worth customising them slightly in order to remedy this. The URL usually needs to be rewritten so that it is of a reasonable length and contains useful keywords. There is also generally a default page title, so this will have to be changed to something that is more meaningful.

Link building within blogs should not be neglected. It is a wise move to include links back to previous posts within the current one, and to use suitable keywords for link text rather than the ubiquitous and quite useless ‘here’.

Maintaining a blog is a commitment, and new content needs to be published fairly regularly in order to build up a following. Persistence is worthwhile, because a flourishing blog is an excellent way to earn links from other sites, with subsequent positive effects on search ratings. Responding to any comments helps to make connections with others, and is also polite. No-one wishes to be ignored after taking the time to leave a comment, and a reply might encourage a reader to return. Relationships with fellow bloggers will necessarily take time to establish and the best guarantee of obtaining links is to have interesting content.

At SearchEngineOptimization.co.uk we know how to create effective and successful search engine optimisation blogs to meet your requirements.

Using Blogs For Search Engine Optimization

April 26th, 2010 by Susie

People get carried away on SEO link building, but there’s much more to a successful site than just having loads of inbound links. There should be plenty of outbound ones too – linking customers to your social media pages, and your site blog. Your internet marketing should always include an informative, professional looking blog. If your own English skills wouldn’t pass a primary level SATS test – buy some in. It’s worth it.

Blogging became popular a while back, and at the time just consisted of textual content. People jotted down their thoughts and emotions in the same way they would a diary. Journalists and writers, meanwhile, used them as a platform for their talents, and a way of airing opinions in public in a way they couldn’t in their professional field. At least one blogger was actually picked up by a print publishing company, and made a best-selling book out of it.

With the technology that’s available today, you no longer need to have the writing skills of a Daily Telegraph journalist to succeed; web companies routinely use blogs as part of their internet reputation management plan. While textual content is still important, it’s backed up by video, audio, Flash media and animated presentation.

News blogs routinely add links to commercial footage of ground-breaking events – there’s no reason why you can’t have a news blog of your own company, especially if you air your products at trade fairs and the like. However, don’t get carried away on flashy images. The best blogs achieve high search engine optimization rankings because they carry relevant, quality content.

Some blogs are really microblogs – like Twitter, they carry pages filled with dozens of posts that are just a few lines long, with few images. For best results however, you need to use a variety of formats to express quality information about your product. Done in this way, it can give your site a sophisticated platform upon which you can market your services, and receive feedback.

Why is text marketing less effective than mixed media?  Consumers like to receive their information in a variety of formats. Some like to read, some like to watch, and some like to sit back with the headphones on. Combining all three into one presentation gives your site the best chance of success, which is why many bloggers take the trouble to include a textual transcript of their video content. As well as attracting customers, it makes the page more visible to the search engines. Video transcriptions can be effective SEO link building tools.

Your blog can be used as an effective social media marketing tool, bringing a diverse number of people to your site. Use link building strategies to spread the word about blog content. For example, a site selling children’s toys could look at marketing them specifically at the adult market. Placing links aimed at bridesmaids, on wedding pages, for example. Plus, look at how model cars, soft toys and Barbie dolls have been targeted towards adult buyers.

This is just an example, but you can already see how blog diversity could aid your search engine optimization plan.

The Importance Of Blogs In Search Engine Optimization

March 30th, 2010 by Susie

Many of the search engine optimization techniques that see sites being highly ranked target other portals as well as the actual website, combining on and off page SEO methods.

There is much work that goes on by expert firms in order to get a company’s website placed in the top spots of searches. Work goes into creating readable pages that deliver what the keywords suggest is featured on the site. However, more time is being devoted by SEO firms to the development of web locations other than the prime portal owned by their clients.

Blogs are a great way to gain the kind of authority needed to be placed ahead of the competition in search engine results. Companies that scan pages to find keywords have certain guidelines that must be adhered to if websites are to have a high ranking. Blogs fulfil a variety of this criterion and their development and maintenance are increasingly offered by search engine optimisation firms.

Google and other similar businesses tend to score blogs quite highly, giving them added authority as new content tends to be regularly uploaded. This suggests to search engine firms that the portal is well-maintained and current, which increases the likelihood it will be placed more highly. As well as proving popular in keyword searches, blogs are also an informal way of providing information and entertainment to potential customers.

This may encourage web visitors to return and garner loyalty from clients. Also, blogs give companies the ideal platform on which to promote offers and provide backlinks to the main portal. These in-bound links have many advantages in that they direct potential customers to the products and services on offer, while they also have an impact on the rankings of the site visitors arrive at after clicking on them. Some blogs are integrated into the main website and can in this case be used to provide a good, relevant internal linking structure to many pages within the website.

Search engine firms calculate the number of these kinds of links when deciding their keyword ranking, with a higher number more likely to result in a boosted placement. In order for blogs to be considered as worthy placements for backlinks, in addition to ranking highly, they need to contain the best keywords for the firm concerned. They also require regular maintenance that may prove too demanding for some businesses that already have a large portal to look after.

This is where a good search engine optimisation company can come in handy. Firms wishing to boost rankings by setting up blogs can enquire whether support is provided by SEO specialists in this regard. Experts in the field may set up packages that oversee the launch and maintenance of additional websites that provide a more informal portal for web visitors to browse. Blogs can be constructed that are designed to complement the visuals and image of the main website, which can help to keep branding constant.

Other necessary elements that contribute to successful sites are also likely to be applied to blog portals, including the development and placement of appropriate keywords. Search engine optimisation companies may also help to integrate blogs and main portals together by providing navigation links. In addition, specialists can also make sure that the newest posts, which are likely to contain keywords, are placed on the homepage of company’s websites. This links the two together and provides a great opportunity for search engines to see the relevance and improve the rankings of your site.
